Jewellery & Watch News
If you felt that Breitling’s existing Superocean Heritage watches have always been a little too conservative and too safe for your wrist, the new models, marking a complete ground-up facelift, definitely deserve to make their way onto your “next-to-buy” list. The Superocean has undergone its first rework since 2017 and now embodies more of that 1950s charm of the original Superocean than ever before. Breitling reboots the series with a higher-performance-focused spec, revitalising the line and appealing to new-generation collectors.
The Superocean Heritage has always been a huge crowd-pleaser. So this new revamp has been no overnight whim. Experts at the La Chaux-de-Fonds company have had to plan this new upgrade to the nth degree, ensuring they maintain the faith of their loyal fan base while also appealing to a new kind of collector. Rather than a complete change, these new models represent an evolution of the collection.

The Superocean Heritage has always been popular for its chunky physique, vintage-infused style, and an extensive list of practical features, making it a great option for a daily beater. Perhaps one of the most exciting propositions of the new Breitling Superocean Heritage watches is the long-awaited arrival of the more compact 40mm case. Or could it be the addition of the brand’s new in-house automatic movement?
The New Breitling Superocean Heritage Watches
First things first. Let’s look at case sizes and dial colours. Breitling has launched three versions of the Superocean Heritage Chronograph 42. The dial colours offered are dark blue, moss green, and classic black. The latter features a two-tone case made from stainless steel, and 18ct rose gold, and all models, as you will have guessed, measure 42mm in diameter. Breitling’s first in-house movement powers this chronograph – the B01, which launched back in 2009, demonstrating Breitling’s initial move towards vertical integration.

Next up, we have the 44, 42 and 40mm Superocean Heritage watches. All of these models are simple time and date timepieces and are offered in the same dial colours. However, the 40mm models are only offered in black and green dials. The next size up – the 42mm model – is available in moss green, dark blue, classic black, and steel, as well as the more luxurious black iteration in steel and 18ct rose gold. The largest of all the B31-powered models is the 43mm option, available in black, moss green, and, this time, a blue two-tone model crafted from steel and rose gold.
All of these automatic three-handed models feature a date window at 6 o’clock and come with two strap options – one is the classic Milanese mesh steel bracelet, a popular characteristic of the vintage-inspired Superocean Heritage watches. The other is a coloured mesh-style rubber band matched to the shade of its respective dial.

Finally, two new 36mm Superocean Heritage watches join the line-up. They come in dial options of dark blue or an unusually striking mint green option. These, however, aren’t powered by the brand’s in-house Calibre 31. Instead, the Calibre 10 is an ETA movement.
The Upgrades
The new Breitling Superocean Heritage watches have been given several thoughtful changes worth noting. All of the latest models feature a sunray finish that catches the light beautifully beneath their super-strong sapphire glass fronts. The hour markers are also beautifully tapered, while the spear-and-arrow handset looks more refined and sharper. Plenty of Super-LumiNova material has been applied to all the features, while the date windows at 6 o’clock have been set against white date wheels to promote legibility. Thanks to the thinner movement in the 44, 42, and 40mm three-hander models, the new Superocean Heritage watches feature a more sculpted case design, providing a more ergonomic fit for the wrist. Shortened lugs also make them comfortable to wear. The screw-down crown also gets a new shape, replacing the larger, blockier-looking crown with a subtler, more rounded shape.

The 200M water resistance is a handy feature, as always, enabling the Superocean watch to come with you wherever the day takes you. Plus, the action on the unidirectional rotating bezel is excellent. Those benefiting from the brand’s relatively new Calibre 31 will also be able to take advantage of an impressive 78-hour power reserve. This is a great little feature if you tend to rotate your watch collection regularly, enabling you to swap the watch for a different timepiece, safe in the knowledge that it will keep perfect time whilst away from your wrist.
